SHORT FILM | BEGINNING THE EDITING PROCESS

Throughout the editing process of my short film I learnt alot on how to navigate around iMovie. For the bringing sequence of my film- the titles- i wanted all the clips to be in slow motion with not diegetic sound for the clip. In order to do this, i had to slow down the clips individual and mute all on  going sounds in them. Once i had done this I opted to add sound of the top which was 'Drone Dark Suspense 1' which came with iMovie and a recording of children's voices which I found on YouTube. I though i found it on Youtube, i could not convert it straight on to iMovie so i had to use my iPhone 6 to voice record the sound and then upload it to iMovie. Although there is probably and quicker and easier route to get this done, my way worked successfully.

In the second scene of my film, there is a voice over of a psychologist/counsellor. I again recorded this on my phone and uploaded it to iMovie. Also on this clip, there is diegetic music playing from a jewellery box in the shot. I opted to keep this music playing as well as i feel it gives a suitable eary feel and coincides with the children's voices at the beginning of my film. When I first began to edit this section the diegetic music was too overpowering of the voice over. To resolve this I turned down the clip sound slightly and increased the voice over. This gave the perfect balance of sound.

Furthermore, at other stages of editing my film I had to get to grips with splitting a clip in order to create the fast moving pace i wanted in some aspects of my film. Along with this, i wanted to slow down a clip but keep the same audio playing over the top. To do this, I had to 'detach audio' and then delete the actual clip. These were both new skills i learnt whilst working on my short film.

PRE PRODUCTION | INFLUENCES

Film such as Sinister, Insidious and Carrie all had an influence on my idea for my own short film. Although they are feature length films rather than short films, it is the plot of them that had the biggest influence. All three of these films have an aspect of supernatural horror in them which is what I have aimed for with my film.

Furthermore, in terms of post production of my film when i begin to concentrate on my poster, all above film posters have a focus of the colour red which is an obvious connotation of horror and blood which I will mimic in my own film poster

DECONSTRUCTIONIST

Deconstruction is a philosophy form of philosophical and literary analysis which is derived from Jacque Derrida's word of Grammatology.

It suggests that all western literature and philosophy implicitly relies on a 'Metaphysics of presence' where intristic meaning is accessible by virtue of pure presence.

"Deconstruction denies the possibility of a "pure presence". It thus denies the possibility of essential or intrinsic and stable meaning and the unmediated access to "reality". Derrida points that "from the moment that there is meaning there are nothing but signs. We think only in signs". Language, considered as a system of signs, as Ferdinand de Saussure says, is nothing but differences. contends that "words have meaning only because of contrast-effects with other words...no word can acquire meaning in the way in which philosophers from Aristotle to Bertrand Russell have hoped it might—by being the unmediated expression of something non-linguistic. Any given concept is thus constituted in reciprocal determination, in terms of its oppositions, e.g. perception/reason, speech/writing, mind/body, interior/exterior, marginal/central, sensible/intelligible, intuition/signification, nature/culture, etc. Derrida terms 'logocentrism' the philosophical commitment to pure, unmediated, presence as a source of self-sufficient meaning."
